Sex. Marivs Malleolivs
Optio Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Sextvs Marivs Malleolivs est

Name: Sextvs Marivs Malleolivs
Rank: Optio
Origin: Tarraco – Tarraconensis, Hispania

For three generations my family have lived in Tarraco, a Port City in North Eastern Hispania. It is the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. My father Ioseph, like his father and grandfather before him was a fisherman, providing food for the City and the Roman Army. But my father was also an apprentice to an Iberian sword maker who taught my father the art of sword making.

By the time I was 8 years old I spent the summer months fishing with by Grandfather and uncles, but spent most of my time observing and learning the art of the blacksmiths and armourers. By this time my father was providing all the metal works required by the Roman Army and Navy in Tarraco. He was offered enlistment into the X Legion under Gaius Octavius (Later Augustus) during the Civil wars (41-40 BC), a move he later told me, made by the Army to cut down on the expenses of his labours.

I enlisted in the X Legion under Augustus in the year 10 AD, being dispatched to Syria in the East to join Legio X Fretensis, who were on campaign in Palmyra and Zeugma to secure the frontier against Parthia. Our Legion relocated to the coastal city of Caesarea Maritima during the winter period.

Nickname (Agnomina) – Malleolius “the hammer” given to me for my work in Armour manufacture and repair of my Fratres’ armour.
