LVCIVS LICINVS MVRENA

L. Licinvs Mvrena
Miles Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Lvcivs Licinvs Mvrena est

Name: Lvcivs Licinvs Mvrena
Rank: Miles Gregarivs
Origin: Rome, Lativm

My name is Lvcivs Licinvs Mvrena. I hail from a senatorial family which is one of the oldest and richest in Rome and my ancestors were given several provinces to govern in the early roman empire’s history such as the provinces of Hispania, Gallia Narbonensis and Germania Inferior.

I was born in Rome and at the age of 14 my father began to train me in military affairs such as practicing with the sword, bow and arrow and throwing the pilum. I travelled with him throughout the empire and I could observe how to govern a province. When I grew up he became an orator and the emperor quickly sent him to govern the far out province of Syria were at the time was being attacked by the Parthian empire. I quickly proved that I was a capable legionary and went on to defeat the Parthian forces.

I will never forget the triumph we were given for our success!

QVINTVS DOMITIVS DRVSVS

Q. Domitivs Drvsvs
Miles Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Qvintvs Domitivs Drvsvs est

Name: Qvintvs Domitivs Drvsvs
Rank: Miles Gregarivs
Origin: Thebae, Achaea (Graecia)

I hail from a gladiator family, where my father won his freedom by winning many fights in the arena. He was awarded a wooden rudus to symbolise his freedom. As time passed he married and had a son, myself, whom he named Qvintvs. I was raised in the Greek city of Thebae (Thebes) in the Greek province of Achaea.

My father taught me everything from fighting with bare hands, in the Greek wrestling fashion, to armed combat. Being Theban meant being raised in a society that valued men who know how to wield a weapon, especially in the brutal times that came upon us as a result of the Achaean wars with the Aetolian League. Soon, I grew up and enrolled with the Fretensis Legion to honour my father and hope to one day rise in ranks. My reputation though is that of brawler and during one such brawl, I came to know two other legionaries of the Tenth: Regillvs and Mvrena. True, we did beat each other up, but we became best of friends so much so that we love each other like brothers.

Together, we have fought countless battles and we also developed something of a tradition between us: that of drinking ourselves to a stupor after a successful battle. Not to mention that we are also a rowdy bunch, playing pranks on each other… and true to our nature, having a go at each other in the occasional brawl just for the thrill of it.

OCTAVIVS SENTIVS REGILLVS

Oct. Sentivs Regillvs
Miles Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Octavivs Sentivs Regillvs est

Name: Octavivs Sentivs Regillvs
Rank: Miles Gregarivs
Origin: Tvscvlvm, Lativm (Italia)

My name is Octavivs Sentivs Regillvs and I was born in Tvscvlvm in Lativm. My father and mother have many wine farms and estates and as a result they are very wealthy people and I, their only child, was kept in good hands and was always well fed. As I grew up, I became quite the rebellious type and decided to reject my comfortable life in my father’s estates. I saw they were recruiting in the legion and decided to join because it is different than civilian life. I figured I could release all of my anger in battles. For me, the sound of thousands of swords clashing as blood splatters amidst the cacophony of shouting is music to my ears.

It is not easy to fight in battles but I always have my loyal best friend by my side Qvintvs Domitivs Drvsvs to back me up. We always had each other’s backs and trained together in the legion and we both served under the emperor Caesar Augustus. In the legion, I learned to respect and be loyal to my brothers-in-arms as well as to the emperor. Before I go to battle I always say this phrase: ‘Pain is temporary but pride is forever. Ave!

OCTAVIVS HOSTILIVS CORVVS

Oct. Hostilivs Corvvs
Miles Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Octavivs Hostilivs Corvvs est

Name: Octavivs Hostilivs Corvvs
Rank: Miles Gregarivs
Origin: Tarraco, Hispania Tarraconensis

I was born and raised in Tarraco, Hispania. My father is the owner of a silver mine and has a jewelry production business there. He earns decent money to take care of our family of ten.
I have two older sisters who have married and started their own family; and five younger brothers who are all being taught jewelry making by our father and other skills that could help the business . I have always found metals and gems fascinating but I was never interested in making jewelry, perhaps more interested in wearing it.

As I was starting to mature, we were given Roman citizenship for the protection of the family and our business. That is when my interest in the 10th Legion started to grow. Some time later, I travelled to Rome and met various legionaries. I joined the 10th Legion Fretensis as a result of my passion for adventure and travels but most importantly for my ever-growing love for Rome.
During my time in the Legion, I have made several good friends including Arlynn, the only daughter of Breonna, who caught my eye even in a romantic way. She often spoke to me about her life in Britannia; my interest in Arlynn sparked my interest in the Celtic culture.

My objectives for the future in the Legion are to gain glory and fame in Rome. As for personal inclinations; I would like to settle, marry and start a family here in Rome as well.
And so, this is my adventure….

ARLYNN

Arlynn
Domina Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Arlynn est

Name: Arlynn
Rank: Domina
Origin: Britannia

My name is Arlynn, the only daughter of Breonna, Princess of the Cantii Tribe and a direct descendant of Anarevitos, where my grandfather, Claudius was King of the Province. I hail from Britannia, the lands of the Celtic tribe Cantiaci (Cantt), to be precise, which is the most civilized of the tribes and allies of Rome. The Cantii traded with the Mediterranean world, exchanging locally produced cattle, grains and slaves for wine, olive oil and exotic forms of glassware and pottery.

“Ex his omnibus longe sunt humanissimi qui Cantium incolunt, quae regio est maritima omnis, neque multum a Gallica differunt consuetudine.”

Of all these (British tribes), by far the most civilised are they who dwell in Kent, which is entirely a maritime region, and who differ but little from the Gauls in their customs.” De Bello Gallicum – Julius Caesar

My mother, Breonna often sadly recounts our rather tumultuous family history, particularly how we lost our family titles and how our estate passed on to Cossus Cornelius thereafter, when my brave grandfather, who alas I never met, was mortally wounded in combat against an adversary tribe of the Romans in saving Cossus’ life. Cossus was then appointed by the Roman Governor as Praetor and Magistrate of Cantii land and Legatus of the Roman garrison. We, in turn came under the protection of Cossus, who in gratitude of my late grandfather, freed us, made my mother a Roman citizen and later adopted her like his own child.

Life became quiet enough in Britannia. I was tutored in reading and writing in Greek and Latin, and astronomy & arts, all of which I mastered well – but I yearned to explore the world outside my Britannia. During my time of pedagogy, I came across many books about other cultures which engaged my interest in learning about other civilizations. Thus, it is one of my many inspirations for times ahead to travel and have a taste of other places away from the perimeters of my home. My mother Breonna was in close contact with the Roman overlords, which power and wisdom I then inherited at a young age. As noblewomen, we proudly adorned ourselves with the finest of imported silks and jewelry, yet we humbly occupied ourselves with the various aspects of cloth making, namely dyeing, spinning and weaving. Our lavish fashions, to which we became renowned in all the winds of the Roman Empire, left a distinguishing impression on many tradesmen.

I have befriended many people from the Legion, all of whom show amiability. One of whom is Corvvs, with whom I spend a lot of time speaking about my life back in Britannia. I must admit to a certain romantic admiration towards him.

Fate had it that at the age of twelve, my step-uncle and now our protector, Qvintvs Avrelivs Procvlvs, sole heir of Cossus, Proconsul of Rome and Legate of the Tenth Legion Fretensis was called to Rome, and all the household followed him. I am now a Roman domina, living comfortably in his estate, meeting people from different stratas of society and appreciating the beautiful frescoes, mosaics, pottery and paintings that Rome has to offer. I am one of many aspirations for the future; some of which are to travel, marry and start a family here in Rome.

And so, this is my adventure…

NARAVAS

Naravas
Puer Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Naravas est

Name: Naravas
Rank: Puer
Origin: Cirta, Numidia

Naravas is the son of a Numidian merchant. His family settled in Cirta on the Mediterranean coast of Numidia many generations ago. The city, having fallen into Roman hands during Julius Caesar’s consulship shortly before Naravas’ birth, young Naravas grew accustomed to the sight of Roman legionaries who were locally known as Sittiani. Indeed, the Romans were no strange sight for Naravas’ family as his ancestors had partaken in the Jugurthine wars. These wars, named after King Jugurtha of Numidia, were often the subject of many stories that Naravas heard from his mother. His father too fascinated him with tales about these Roman colonisers from his mercantile travels.

Since when he was six years of age, young Naravas started travelling with his father, learning the trade of a merchant and often trading goods and wares such as ivory and spices all along the Northern African coast. His family had been eyeing the possibility of extending their trade across the sea and this became possible when Naravas’ father acquired an oncraria from a retired Roman merchant using Roman denarii that he had managed to save along the years. Disaster soon struck though as both father and son ended up shipwrecked on the coast of Judaea. He was cared for by local Roman physicians and when he recovered from unconsciousness, Naravas soon learned that he was the sole survivor – his father was sadly never found.

From that point onwards, a new world opened its doors as Naravas started following a legion that happened to be in area. This legion, the Tenth Fretensis was at the time on the lookout for Jewish Zealots in order to suppress them. The legionaries adopted Naravas as one of their own, took great care of him and even affectionately started calling him Filivs. Thus, the once aspiring Numidian merchant from Cirta, now started learning the art of war from the legion that took him under its wings.

SERTORIVS GEMINIVS TRIO

Sert. Geminivs Trio
Miles Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Sertorivs Geminivs Trio est

Name: Sertorivs Geminivs Trio
Rank: Miles Gregarivs
Origin: Melita

My family were from Rome, but they lived in Melita, I Sertor Geminius Trio was born and raised there. I did a bit of every kind of work there, but I am a fighter and a warrior, when I saw the Roman legions for the first time, I was impressed by their armor and at that moment, I knew what I wanted.

When I began, it was hard, and every mistake you do in the training, you have to pay for it, but if you want to survive in battle you need to be strong. At first it was fun: drinking everyday, women as much as I could want, and food. But one night I was sick and did not have any wine to drink, I was on watch and the others were drunk. When everyone was too drunk to stand, something was coming on shore… a ship! I called the others but no one came, I saw the shadows coming and they started killing everyone. I fought but they caught me and took me as a slave, I ended up as a rower for many days, but one day, by the will of Mars I was released… only to be enslaved again in a villa, but I managed to escape and survived by the will of Mars.

One day I was walking in a secluded quarter and someone was fighting, it was one against six people. I heard the one fighting alone speak Latin… it was a Roman and I helped him and fought with him and we killed all of them! This Roman was a Tribunus and he took me with him back, this time to Rome, where I enlisted with the 10th Fretensis as a legionary.

LVCIVS TVLLIVS VINCENTIVS

L. Tvllivs Vincentivs
Miles Legio X Fret.

Nomen mevm Lvcivs Tvllivs Vincentivs est

Name: Lvcivs Tvllivs Vincentivs
Rank: Miles Gregarivs
Origin: Mediolanvm, Gallia Cisalpina

Lvcivs Tvllivs Vincentivs was born and lived most of his childhood in Mediolanum. He left Mediolanum due to conflict with his parents and left for Rome for a new life. On the way to Rome he encountered a Legionary patrol on their way to a nearby fort and started doing some maintenance work around the fort until he was trust worthy enough to start training for becoming a legionary.

When his training was complete his assignments were mostly guard duties and patrols along the trade routes mostly due to bandits. He hoped that someday he would be sent along the Empire’s border for some interesting assignments and prove his worth in order to be able to fulfil his dream and be considered for the coveted position of Praetorian Guard.

Vincentivs, shackled by self-doubt and uncertainty, is a reserved person and talks to few people… mostly those he is comfortable with and also enjoys to tease people. He is also loyal and acts according to his moral principles. Fascinated with Gladiatorial Games and Gladiators themselves, he will always try to find the time to visit the Gladiatorial Games. After his service is complete and hopefully after his dream comes true to be a Praetorian Guard he’ll settle down with a wife in a quiet farm in the countryside.
